Professor of Medicine (1976-present) and Head of the Red Blood Cell Pathology Unit (1997 –present) at the Hospital Clínic i Provincial (University of Barcelona), with main activity focused on the diagnosis of RBC defects and in the identification of low prevalence anaemias or “Rare Anaemias”. Research has mainly based on physiopathology, molecular mechanisms and epidemiology of red blood cell (RBC) disorders due to hereditary enzymopathies (G6PD, PK and others), haemoglobinopathies (Sickle-cell anaemia and thalassaemias) and membrane defects (hereditary spherocytosis elliptocytosis and stomatocytosis). Scientific Trajectory is guaranteed by 326 publications in scientific journals, the participation (as editor or collaborator) in about 25 books of haematology, and by the accomplishment of 43 funded research projects, which have been partially funded by different public health organizations from Spain (Ministry of Health and Education and Science), Catalan Government and European Commission.

Hematology and Clinical Health issues

Dr. Ilham has more than twenty years of experience in training and teaching at both national and international levels. She is a professor of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine Cairo University where she teaches, assesses and constructs curricula for undergraduates and postgraduates medical school students. Also, she is a researcher in the medical and educational fields with more than thirty publications in the national and the international journals. Dr. Ilham is an international certified trainer from the International Board of Certified Trainers (IBCT), Netherlands. She has a Master’s degree in Health Profession Education (MHPE) form Maastricht University, Netherlands and Suez Canal University, Egypt. She is a trainer/ instructor in many national and international training programs/ courses such as: the Egyptian fellowship (ElZamalla ElMasrya), the Faculty and Leadership Development programs (FLDP), the TOT of the Royal college of Surgery of Ireland and the American University in Cairo (AUC). Dr. Ilham is a fellow in the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), Philadelphia, USA. As a FAIMER member, Dr. Ilham is exposed regularly to the new teaching and assessment strategies. Dr. Ilham is an intern of the editorial internship program in Medical Education, UK.

Published more than 100 journals on Hematology, pediatrics and Thrombosis

He had started the interest in hemophilia and bleeding disorders in 2002 same year our country joined WFH in Spain. During all these years he had built my experience as a physician diagnose and treat patients with different bleeding disorders. He had a chance to get in close contact with patients and exposed to the clinical, social and personal problems. He had contributed to the hemophilia society in my country and Middle East countries by: 1.Conducting many workshops for care givers 2.Contributed as a speaker in different cities of my country and ME countries 3.Organizing yearly hemophilia awareness days 4.Started comprehensive bleeding clinic in few cities of Saudi Arabia and had the first private and charity clinics for non-Saudis 5.Conducted two epidemiological surveys in the country for detecting the prevalence of inhibitors and bleeding symptoms and disorders in major cities of Saudi Arabia 6.Started molecular diagnosis of hemophilia and Glanzmann disease 7.Contributed in establishing guidelines in hemophilia, von Willebrand and Glanzmann diseases which became the source of management for local practitioners. 8.After years of work with the government and with help of WFH they succeeded to have Saudi hemophilia society and he became the vice president. 9.In had succeeded in getting financial support for patients who are not covered medically for treatment of inherited disorders like Hemophilia and they have some of on prophylaxis for long period covered by insurance or by charity support.

Dr. Mattar is a professor of Internal Medicine and Clinical Hematology, Cairo University since 2003. She specializes in anemias, bleeding and clotting. She is also interested in immunity and infectious disorders with special impact on both benign and non-benign blood problems. Dr. Mervat is an experienced internal medicine consultant who can deal with the most complex blood disorders like anemia, hemophilia, thrombocytopenia etc.
